Summary: This spiral bound book of 496 pages is designed to teach students how written English works. It scaffolds the development of spelling skills and knowledge from year to year. Chapter 1 sets out the foundation of the instructional programme and links this to current research. Chapter 2 discusses the spelling curriculum and the importance of assessment in determining students' instructional needs, along with ideas for incorporating spelling into a daily classroom schedule. Chapters 3- 5 provide full teaching notes for different levels of spelling lessons. The appendices provide a full range of assessments with notes on their analysis, a range of reproducible resources to make spelling lessons interactive along with ideas for incorporating word-level strategies into spelling and reading lessons. Although Switch on to Spelling was written for students in years 1- 5/6 students, it can be used with students of any age. Many teachers use it with older students who find spelling difficult and with students of all ages who are English language learners. The teacher guide comes with a two hour professional development DVD, a CD containing all practice activities (with answers) and all reproducible pages from the teacher guide. (Publisher)
